Solar Pumps

We installed the power conduit to the panels inside of the pipe.

We installed our first solar pumps twenty + years ago back in California. The experiences we had then taught us to be very careful about when, where, and how we install solar pumps. We knew we needed to be careful when some of the solar pumps we ordered and used came with rebuild kits. Solar pumping systems are needed sometimes, but most of the time a cost analysis over a twenty year span will prove that solar pumps are many times more expensive than regular submersible pumps. Most of the time, a cost analysis will show that installing a more powerful – hopefully a 230 volt – inverter system, will allow you to run a regular submersible pump – and anything else you will need in the future.

The Inverter System

However, there are instances where solar pumping systems are the perfect solution. Part of the perfect solution is  . . . just about perfect water. Most all solar pumps have such tight tolerances for efficiency that even a small amount of Iron, grit, or Hardness, will cause the pumps not to work. There is one solar pump that will deal with poor water quality that we know of, but that pump is extremely expensive.

If you are reading this, you probably are leaning towards wanting a solar pumping system. If you want a solar pumping system and are willing to bear the extra expense, the extra inconvenience when the system stops working and needs to be repaired, then we will be happy to work with you and provide you with our top-of-the-line service and innovative installation techniques.

One of difficulties with solar systems is that when most of the water is used – early or late in the day – is not when the sun is providing power to the solar panels. So the solar pump that usually uses the most electricity of anything in the house, has to pull the electricity from batteries. There is another way of dealing with this problem. Install several pressure tanks, either in the house, or underground. The water pumps pressure into these pressure tanks, then the pressure tanks store the water pressure for use even with the sun is not shining on the solar panels.

The best part about solar pumps is that they have come a long way in the past twenty years. If I found a beautiful property in the middle of no-where and for some reason needed to have a DC solar pump, I wouldn’t hesitate to purchase the property and install a solar system. The next best part about solar pumps is dealing with us. We will work with you and present you with options and ideas. Then we’ll be there for you when you need service.
